MIniaturized-Cell-Enhanced PhotoAcoustic Spectroscopy
Scientists from the LOD work on a miniaturized photoacoustic cell. The volume of internal cavity for the cell is ~ 5 mm3. We have an experience how to design, manufacture, test and apply such cells. Despite the reduced sizes, the developed cells are comparable in the performance (that is, in the sensitivity) with respect to non-miniaturized ones. The minimal detectable absorption estimated from our experiment for the cells is better than ~ 10-8 cm-1 W Hz-1/2. Such a millimeter-sized cell powered by the minute commercially available laser source (for instance, a near-infrared distributed-feed-back laser diode or mid-infrared quantum cascade laser) with a typical output power of ~ 10 mW will allow to detect trace gases at a sensitivity level, which can be attained by the absorption spectroscopy techniques along the optical path longer than 10 km. See http://www.micepas.basnet.by/ (http://www.micepas.basnet.by/) for more details.

Study on self-reconstruction of Bessel beams
A series of experiments on passing Bessel beams in scattering media has been conducted confirming the effect of reconstruction of a Bessel beam after shading by single obstacles. Thus, the detailed theoretical and experimental investigations have confirmed that the self-reconstruction of the structure is the basic property of the Bessel beams. This property constitute a physical basis of the concrete developments of various optical probes for the nondestructive testing and studying various scattering media. Bessel beam based laser probes are perspective in optical tomography, confocal microscopy, multi-photon fluorescence microscopy, imaging through scattering media et all.

Multiscope Prostate Cancer Detection
Feasibility of highly accurate differentiation between malignant and benign tissue in prostatic specimen has been demonstrated by using combined Laser-Induced Fluorescence and Electrical Impedance measurements.

Upcoming Activity

Guest Scientists from NLC CSIR
In the framework of joint collaboration program between the ISL-LOD and the NationalLaser Center at the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (NLC CSIR, http://www.csir.co.za/ (http://www.csir.co.za/) ), Pretoria, South Africa, three post-graduate students from South Africa, Mrs. Mapule Pertunia Degama, Mrs. Angela Louise Janse van Rensburg, and Mr. Ihar Litvin, will visit the ISL's labs and join the research on generation and application of vortex light beams. The post-graduates will stay in Minsk since September 1st until September 29th, 2008. Dear Colleagues, you are heartily welcomed!

3rd Advisory Board Meeting, March 11-13, 2007, Dresden
In accordance with the decision made by the participants of the 2rd Board meeting of theInternational Scientific Laboratory of Optical Diagnostics (ISL-LOD) in Minsk on May 28-30, 2006, the third meeting of the ISL-IOD’s Advisory Board is up to take place in Dresden (Germany) at a new building of the Fraunhofer-Institute IZFP on March 11-13, 2007.

At a Glimpse

Research Areas LOD's scientists in Minsk are skilled in a broad spectrum of optical techniques including, original femtosecond and scanning near-field microscopy, heterodyne and speckle interferometry, holographic inspection methods and polarimetry. Combined with the IZFP researchers’ measurement art in ultrasound and radiation diagnostics (x-ray tomography, neutrons, microwaves beam techniques, radiotracers, electrons, ions) and deep knowledge of material nature it results in the development of innovative solutions for the variety of application areas being inaccessible for both Parties in the past.

In profile of the ISL LOD are

• Laser femtosecond technologies, including femtosecond spectroscopy for material characterization, biology and medicine
• Optical Profiling of Nano and Microstructures
• Nondestructive Characterization of Innovative Materials and Industrial Components
• Nanosensors development
• Medical diagnostics
• Automation of inspection methods, their integration into manufacturing technology

ISL works in close cooperation with German and Belarus industry aiming to provide effective market solutions.

We seek for your technical problem to be solved!
